Motorbike Rental Insurance in Bangkok: What's Covered If You Crash or It's Stolen

"What happens if something goes wrong?" is the second most common question we get, right after licenses. Here's a plain-English breakdown of deposits, damage, theft, and who pays for what.

What's actually on the bike: compulsory insurance only

Every registered motorbike in Thailand carries พ.ร.บ. (por.ror.bor.), the compulsory government motor insurance — and that's the only insurance on a rental bike. Thai insurers don't sell voluntary or comprehensive policies for rental motorbikes; it simply isn't a product available to rental shops, ours included. We provide a helmet with every bike and take a cash or card-hold deposit at pickup, refunded in full if the bike comes back as it left.

What พ.ร.บ. covers — and what it doesn't

พ.ร.บ. covers medical treatment costs for people injured in an accident — yours and anyone else involved — up to the statutory limit. That's it. It does not cover damage to the rental bike, it does not cover damage to another person's vehicle or property, and it does not cover theft. If you want protection beyond emergency medical costs, arrange a separate travel insurance policy before your trip — check the fine print carefully, since many general travel policies exclude motorbike riding entirely.

Damage to the bike itself

Cosmetic scratches from normal use aren't charged. Damage from an accident or a drop is deducted from your deposit up to the actual repair cost — we always show you the repair invoice, we don't estimate or guess. If repair costs exceed the deposit (rare, usually only in a serious crash), we discuss it directly with you rather than silently charging a card.

If you crash into someone else's vehicle or property

Be aware: since there's no comprehensive insurance behind the bike, you are personally responsible for the other party's vehicle or property damage — พ.ร.บ. only pays for medical treatment, not repairs or replacement costs. Don't move the vehicles until police arrive if there's a dispute over fault or anyone is injured (standard practice in Thailand). Take photos, get the other party's details, and call us — we can usually talk you through the process in English over the phone.

If the bike is stolen

There's no theft coverage on a rental motorbike, so a stolen bike is the renter's financial responsibility, typically at the bike's replacement value. Report it to the nearest police station immediately and get a police report, then contact us right away — don't wait. This is exactly why we ask you to always park where other bikes are already parked and use the lock we provide, especially overnight — see our parking guide for where that is street by street.

Tips to avoid problems altogether

Wear the helmet we give you, every time — it's the single biggest factor in accident severity and the rule police check most. Don't ride after drinking. Check the fuel and existing scratches together with us at pickup so there's no ambiguity later. And save our WhatsApp number before you ride off — most issues are solved with a five-minute message, not a drama.
